The professional identity is discussed as a relevant concept for the studies regarding how individuals redefine the use of IT. The social construction of reality and the role of the user as an agent of the use of IT are assumptions of this essay. It argues that the structure of technology is constructed in practice, when individual characteristics, abilities and objective will influence the use of IT. The concepts of identity and professional identity, and the way they can be measured, are also presented.
