Abstract

This work intends to clarify the evolution of the manufacturing systems that led to the rise of Mass Customization, as well as its concept, customization levels and the most adequate technologies and methodologies available. While trying to identify the main relations between this manufacturing system and the industrial design field, it focuses on the product development process. In order to identify the main aspects in which mass customization influences the design process, the product family architecture is presented as a valuable tool.
